IB Diploma Programme at Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium

In November 2006 Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium was authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) to teach the IB Diploma Programme starting in August 2007. In May 2009 the first group of 9 students successfully completed the two-year course and were awarded a bilingual IB Diploma.

All students enrolled at the FWG have to take the Abitur. Those who additionally wish to take the IB Diploma Programme must apply for a place on the course which covers six subjects at two different levels. These subjects correspond to those the students choose for their Abitur course.

It is the hexagon core that especially characterizes the IBDP. Students also write an Extended Essay, take TOK (Theory of Knowledge), and carry out CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) activities. TOK aims to encourage learners to reflect on how they acquire their knowledge while CAS gives them hands-on experience in different areas outside the classroom.
